ANRA Technologies Empowers NASA's Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Initiatives - A Case Study

ANRA Technologies has emerged as a pivotal collaborator in NASA’s quest to advance unmanned aviation technology, particularly drones and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, with a relentless focus on enhancing safety, scalability, and technology integration. The innovative Traffic Management Solution offered by ANRA has become instrumental in the pursuit of these goals, as it facilitates the integration and visualization of various surveillance sources within NASA’s High-Density Vertiplex (HDV) Operations Centre. The central objective of this partnership revolves around overcoming the critical challenges associated with beyond-visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) missions for unmanned aircraft systems. The key objectives and innovations of this collaboration are as follows:

  • Integration of cooperative and non-cooperative surveillance sensor data into a unified common operating picture, which incorporates data from NASA’s radar systems, cooperative ADS-B, FLARM sensors, and path prediction features to enhance deconfliction capabilities.
  • Provision of strategic deconfliction, geozone creation, and alerting features for unmanned aircraft through ANRA’s Traffic Management Solution. The inclusion of surveillance data enables intelligent routing of unmanned aircraft, thereby reducing the risk of air collisions with both crewed and unmanned aircraft, significantly enhancing safety.
  • Scalability and adherence to international standards are hallmarks of ANRA’s capabilities, aligning with the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) vision for the seamless integration of drones and VTOLs into the national airspace system.

Outcome

The integration of fused surveillance data from ANRA into NASA’s UTM platform has notably enhanced security and reliability for BVLOS operations, a pivotal development in preparing for the future of unmanned aviation, especially in high-density operational scenarios. This collaboration with NASA signifies a significant stride toward building a strong foundation for safe and scalable air mobility solutions, particularly crucial for urban environments. Subsequent phases of the project are intended to evaluate vertiport automation systems and address operational and safety concerns.

Conclusion

The partnership between ANRA Technologies and NASA represents a pivotal milestone in the evolution of air mobility solutions for the future. By delivering robust, scalable, and compliant traffic management solutions, ANRA empowers NASA’s endeavors to enhance safety, airspace management, and the integration of unmanned aviation technologies into the national airspace system. This collaboration underscores a steadfast commitment to safety, innovation, and the maximization of the potential of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
