WASHINGTON, DC) ANRA Technologies, the Most Trusted Name in UAS Traffic Management (UTM) Joins the Swiss Civil Aviation Authority for Establishing U-Space Regulatory Framework.

With the drone market expected to have exponential growth over the next few years and a large numbers of anticipated users, one of the required key features of UAS traffic management (UTM) is to have a system that does not require constant human monitoring and surveillance and can still ensure the safety, security, and control of drones in the low-altitude airspace.

The goal of UTM should be to develop an independent, self-directed, and scalable system that will manage and monitor drones and their flight operations. In Europe, the European Commission has launched the concept of U-Space, a set of decentralized services created to integrate drones in the airspace and to enable them to operate together with manned aircraft.

The Swiss U-Space Implementation

In Switzerland, several stakeholders have worked on products and services linked to U-Space. With the view to ensure transparency and inclusiveness, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) has facilitated the creation of the Swiss U-Space Implementation (SUSI) platform.

Skyguide, the Swiss Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), has been commissioned to implement the applicable legislation and to develop and implement the Flight Information Management System (FIMS). Skyguide will provide different FIMS functionalities and interfaces over time in accordance with the overall SUSI project. ANRA Technologies will participate in SUSI in multiple categories, ranging from technical discussions to field demonstrations, offering ANRA’s years of UTM experience and mature capabilities.

ANRA Technologies is excited to join this initiative from Skyguide and Swiss FOCA that will accelerate the integration of UAS into the national airspace. Federated service providers will enable an open, competitive marketplace which fosters innovation and brings best of breed capability for the SUSI UTM platform, said ANRA’s CEO Amit Ganjoo.

In February 2019, Europe agreed on a set of rules and procedures to operate drones. These rules will need to be implemented by Member States and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) by mid-2020. The European Commission together with EASA have agreed to work in, close cooperation with Member States, to develop, as a matter of urgency, an institutional, regulatory and architectural framework for a competitive U-space services market.

This SUSI effort is inspired by the US Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) UTM concept of operations (CONOPs) and the work of CONOPs for European UTM System (CORUS) and has resulted in the current Swiss U-Space CONOPs (SUSCO).

In support of SUSI, ANRA will offer an advanced UAS Traffic Management Platform (UTM) called DroneUSS™ that can be deployed standalone or combined into a comprehensive service package for an ANSP, regulator or a commercial enterprise. The platform is comprised of microservices that are designed to scale to support millions of drones. These software platforms include features such as discovery/authentication/registration services, mission planning, command and control, automated flight paths, dynamic flight routing, data processing, fleet management, traffic management, and open interfaces to enable integration into ATC as well as emerging capabilities like remote identification of drones.

Since 2015, DroneUSS™ been rigorously tested and vetted by the world’s foremost government aviation entities and is operational today at multiple test sites, commercial enterprises and UAS corridors.

DroneUSS™ supports a myriad of UAS through a cloud-based architecture to enable airspace organization and management, flight awareness, and strategic deconfliction while supporting stakeholder interfaces and integrations. ANRA Technologies has been working on collaborative UTM research and deployments with states with researchers like NASA and regulators and ANSPs including the FAA, United Kingdom’s Department of Transport (DFT) and other Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) globally. This rich history of collaboration and testing has pushed ANRA to the industry forefront, ultimately becoming the leading voice of UTM technology providers.

Earlier this year, ANRA successfully implemented its DroneUSS^TM and FIMS software platforms into the New York State UAS Corridor. This was instrumental for the corridor to conduct multiple, simultaneous BVLOS operations that involved both manned and unmanned vehicles sharing the same airspace. ANRA also provides network and broadcast based Remote ID and detect-and-avoid capabilities to this corridor in line with the latest ASTM standards.

In addition to SUSI, ANRA is engaged with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and participates in UTM standards development for ISO and ASTM. ANRA is a sitting board member at Global UTM Association (GUTMA) and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).
